Authors often buy “editing” as if it is one product. It is not. Developmental editing addresses structure, argument or story, pacing, and big-picture clarity. Line/copy editing tightens sentences, grammar, consistency, and style. Proofreading is the final safety net after larger edits — not a substitute for structural work on an early draft.
How to choose a level
If beta readers get lost or chapters drag, start developmental. If the structure is solid but sentences need polish, choose copy editing. If the manuscript is already strong, proofreading (or a light polish) may be enough before design.
