Paperback vs hardcover is a format decision, not a status decision. Most first-time self-publishers should ship paperback (and eBook) first, then add hardcover if the category and budget support it.
Paperback first when
- You want the standard reader price band
- You want POD economics that usually clear print cost
- You are still proving the title
Hardcover when
- Gift, library, or premium positioning matters in your genre
- Your package includes a hardcover option (Pro lists hardcover option — confirm your tier on the packages page)
- You accept a higher list price to cover manufacturing
Both formats need a wrap cover with a spine calculated from final page count. That is why last-minute hardcover add-ons delay launches. Related: formatting for print and pricing.
