How Long Should a Self-Published Book Be? Word Counts by Genre

How long should a self-published book be? Long enough to deliver the story or argument — and short enough that print cost and reader expectations still match. There is no ISBN rule that says “must be 300 pages.”

Common debut ranges (words, not pages)

  • Novella / short nonfiction: ~20k–40k — often better as eBook-first; thin paperbacks look sparse and still have a cover/setup cost.
  • Standard novel / memoir: ~70k–100k — the band most adult fiction readers expect.
  • Long novel / some fantasy: 100k–120k+ — doable, but print unit cost and proof time go up.
  • Practical nonfiction: often 40k–70k if the promise is tight; padding to “look serious” is obvious.

Page count then depends on trim, type size, and front/back matter. A 80k-word novel at 5.5×8.5 with generous margins is not the same page count as 6×9 with dense type. That page count is what POD uses for manufacturing cost — see pricing.

When length becomes a production problem

  • Very short print books can look unfinished on a shelf
  • Very long color interiors get expensive fast
  • Unedited length is not a flex — it is a developmental-editing issue
