A useful book publishing cost calculator has two columns: what you pay to produce the book, and what you keep when it sells. Mixing those is how quotes lie.
Column A — production (once)
- Editing level you actually need
- Custom cover vs template
- Print + eBook formatting
- ISBN / distribution setup
- Optional hardcover, returns, marketing SKUs
AuthorShelf lists those as packages ($399–$2,989) and à la carte author services. Compare on packages and services.
Column B — per-sale (ongoing)
Print manufacturing + retailer cut. AuthorShelf does not add a third cut. Model trim and page count on Resources. Explainer: what book royalties are.
How to use it in five minutes
- Pick a tier or a freelancer stack.
- Estimate page count and paperback vs hardcover.
- Set a test list price.
- See whether print net is still positive.
- If the math only works at an unrealistic price, change trim or drop color interiors.
