How to publish a book on Amazon KDP is a file-and-metadata problem. Amazon will not edit your novel, design your jacket, or typeset your interior. It will accept files that meet spec and reject files that do not.
What KDP needs from you
- A print interior PDF (or eBook file) that matches the chosen trim and spec
- A cover: eBook image, or a full print wrap with correct spine width
- Title, contributors, description, categories, keywords, price
- ISBN rules for print vs Kindle (they differ — do not guess)
- A preview you actually read before hitting Publish
Where authors stall
The dashboard is easy. The files are not. Bad gutters, unreadable thumbnails, and leftover Word artifacts are why first books look amateur on Amazon even when the writing is good. That is book formatting and custom book cover design, not a KDP setting.
KDP only vs KDP plus wide
KDP puts you in Amazon’s stores. Bookstore and library orderability usually needs a wholesale/POD path (Ingram-class). See IngramSpark vs KDP and how to get your book in bookstores.
When to DIY the dashboard
If you already have retail-ready files, publish on KDP yourself. If you still need production, a listed package (Launch $597 or Pro $997 for most debut authors) buys the files plus setup, then you still sell on Amazon. AuthorShelf does not take a cut of those sales. Related: getting listed on Amazon.
