Paid publishing is not automatically a vanity press
Paying for editing, design, and distribution setup is normal. The vanity-press problem is the sales model: surprise menus after a call, unclear royalties, and pressure to buy marketing that cannot be verified.
AuthorShelf publishes prices before checkout, keeps copyright and net royalties with the author, and tracks production in a lifetime portal. If a company will not do those three things in writing, keep shopping.
A practical filter
Use the 15-point partner checklist: listed inclusions, rights, royalty formula, approval gates, refund/pause language, and no guaranteed bestsellers. Book a free Author Readiness Call if you want a human to walk the filter with you — and leave if you are not confident.
Quick side-by-side (high level)
| Topic | Typical vanity-press pattern | AuthorShelf |
|---|---|---|
| Prices | Often revealed on a sales call | Six tiers listed publicly $399–$2,989 |
| Rights | Sometimes muddy or “case by case” | 100% rights retained |
| Royalties | Publisher cut or confusing fees | 100% of net book royalties to you |
| Proof | Email threads, hard to audit | Portal phases, files, and written approvals |
Competitor practices vary by package and year. Verify current terms on their site. AuthorShelf figures reflect listed public packages ($399–$2,989), 100% rights/royalties, and lifetime portal.
