15-Point Checklist for Choosing a Self-Publishing Partner

1 Is every package inclusion listed before I pay? Avoid opaque “custom quote only” menus that balloon after you are emotionally committed. 2 Do I keep 100% of copyright and publishing rights? You should never have to ask permission to republish, adapt, or switch partners later. 3 Do I keep 100% of book royalties (no publisher revenue share)? Confirm the per-copy math: wholesale minus print, not a mystery split. 4 Is there a real project dashboard — or only email threads? Visibility prevents “where is my book?” anxiety for months. 5 Can I approve covers, interiors, and proofs in writing? Approvals should be tracked, not lost in inboxes. 6 What is included for editing, design, and formatting at my tier? Compare apples-to-apples across companies using the same manuscript length. 7 How are AI-assisted services quality-controlled by humans? Ask what “AI” means in practice and who does final QC. 8 Which retailers and distribution channels are included? “Global distribution” should name channels and formats (print, eBook, etc.). 9 Are ISBNs and metadata handled — and who owns them? Clarify imprint, ownership, and transfer if you leave later. 10 What are the revision limits and change fees? Surprise fees often hide in “extra revision rounds.” 11 Is there a subscription or mandatory annual fee after launch? Portal access and “support plans” can become quiet recurring costs. 12 How long does production typically take at my package level? Get a phase timeline, not just a marketing slogan. 13 Who do I message when something is stuck — and how fast? Named team access beats a ticket black hole. 14 What happens after Title Live (royalties, updates, reprints)? Launch is not the end — ask about post-publication support. 15 Can I add only the extras I need without rebuilding the whole package? À la carte should be optional, not a trap that replaces transparency.
